10 Great Ways To Calm Your Nerves Before An Interview | Interview tips | Everybody Poops
In this video, Catherine Byers Breet offers ten great tips for how to calm your nerves before heading in to a high-stakes situation like a job interview or meeting.
I’m here today to talk to you about my top anxiety when you’re going into an interview or a high-stakes meeting or maybe just meeting with somebody for the first time at a networking event or in a networking situation so these are all things that.
I’ve learned along the way many of them the hard way I use them every single day in my own life and I hope that they help you reduce the jitters and go in a little more confident and strong to this high-stakes meeting so I’m gonna start out with a story from my childhood I was 14 years old.
I was heading into a job interview and it wasn’t my first job wasn’t my first job interview but it was the first time the job really mattered to me I was interviewing for a job at a fancy retail shop in my town they sold everything from artwork to children’s clothing and toys everything was all nice and fancy and the people who worked there.
I was freaking out but I was way too proud to either ask her for advice or admit that I was scared so instead I just sat there quietly melting down my mother looked at me and she said you do know that everybody poops and for a second I was mortified that my proper English mother.
Who never left the house without a full face of makeup and her blouse tucked into her pants I was mortified that she said poop out loud and then I burst out laughing because of course she was absolutely right even though the owner who scared me owned a business and always you know big and scary woman she was just like the rest of us in many ways trying to make it work she had a family she laughed she cried.
She had sadness and that was such a powerful lesson for my from my mother and it did really calm me down and allow me to have a little bit of fun in that interview guess what I got the job so my tip number one for you today is exactly that and ice still use this.
Today when I’m heading into high-stakes interviews to remind myself that no matter how big and scary and fancy these people seem to be they’re just like you and me that’s tip number one tip number two recognize that your anxiety is a self-protective measure it is your primal primitive brain saying danger danger ahead so recognize that and honor it and give yourself permission to say ah give yourself a break
