Fear: Friend, or foe?
How are your fears holding you back from the career & life you crave?
Like most of us, I couldn’t WAIT to become a grownup. I dreamed of the day when I would no longer be crippled with worry, fear, self-doubt … or concern about what other people thought of me. I honestly believed that once I got out of college and made it to my mid-twenties, I’d no longer be afraid. (Yes, you can laugh).
And then, at the tender age of twenty-four, I got caught hiding from a very scary VP.
Because I was about to get fired.
And I knew it.
That was NOT my finest moment. In fact, it was the most shocking and humiliating experience of my career. But I was also the moment that forced me to accept that fear was going to be with me for the rest of my life. And it forced me to make a choice: was I going to quit and continue to run away from the things that scared me? Or was I going to stand up, look my fear in the eye and figure out how to deal with it? Fortunately for me, I decided to stay and stand up. That decision changed my life. Not only did I get promoted … and triple my income in the next two years … but it taught me how to name and reframe my fear every single time I was up against a wall.
It has not been easy. And sometimes fear still wins. But I know in my bones that the only reason I have a career and a life I love today is because I found the courage to dance with my fears. This week on Planet Work, I’ll share my favorite tricks for putting my inner criticism in the corner.
Q: What was the moment YOU decided to finally face your fears? And how did that change your life? We would all LOVE to hear your stories. So, bring ‘em on! Pop them in the comments below, then drop by the show to chat with me about it.
